Sustainable tourism is tourism attempting to make a low impact on the environment and local culture. It is aiming to ensure that development brings a positive experience for the locals, the tourism industry and the visitors themselves.

With a new strategy in 2008, focusing on World Heritage and Sustainable tourism, Destination Røros was granted the national pilot for sustainable tourism by Innovation Norway in 2009.

In 2011, Destination Røros was awarded “Best Destination” in the Responsible Tourism Awards. In 2012, we were announced winner in the category “Destination Stewardship” in the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.

In March 2013, the municipality of Røros was one of the first four certified sustainable destinations.

Along with two other candidates Destination Røros was nominated for the Tourism Award 2015 in Norway. This is a coveted award, and we are proud to be nominated by Innovation Norway.
